My version of playing outside did not include plastic sports toys, sprinklers, or even other children for that matter. It did include myself, a hunting knife, and copious amounts of plants and trees. So naturally, when a good friend of mine mentioned the Rutgers Gardens as an option on a lazy Saturday in New Brunswick I said “sure” not really knowing what to expect.

Although I’m fairly new to the New Brunswick area and Rutgers in general, the Gardens has never been mentioned to me before, which leads me to believe it is severely underrated. Some part of me wants to be selfish and keep this wonderland a secret but if you are also into nature, flowers, bugs, or just being outside in general, here’s a great place to spend a few hours and completely lose yourself.

So I finally did it. My pride parade abstemiousness has been broken. 7 hours with Jersey’s LGBTQ finest. Although the actual parade wasn’t much, the lawn party afterwards was dope. It’s a great time to waste a lazy sunday, meet people, drink, buy stuff, and listen to some neat tunes. Needless to say, I cannot wait for the New York Pride Parade on June 24th

Alex's Garden

They say that April showers bring May flowers.

Sometimes songs that should never be taken out of their heavy electric realm find their way to a banjo, and sometimes songs that are acoustic find themselves blasting through distortions peddles up the wazoo. So many covers often feel like disasters, but sometimes those methods actually work out.

I’m exceptionally picky when it comes to cover songs, almost to a fault. If you’re going to tackle one of the greats, you’ve got balls, but that doesn’t always mean you’ve got the talent. Even harder to pull off is a mash-up cover of two classic songs.

Despite these odds, The Crocodiles manage to successfully integrate the peppy vibes of The Beach Boys’ “California Girls,” with the funk of Deee-Lite’s “Groove is in the Heart,” in an eerily perfect way. Ever since I first stumbled upon this cover, I have had it on loop, regretting nothing; it’s been longer than I can remember since I found a cover as awesome as this one. The opening riff is so infectious, the vocals so haunting, yet I still want to hula-hoop around my room like it’s 1990.

Listen and enjoy the sweet Southern California sounds; this is my favourite cover of the week, what’s yours?

As street art expands to become more socially acceptable, partially due to its frequent censure of politics, its pieces are growingly regarded as “art” rather than “vandalism.” As a street art aficionado living right by the city, I cannot believe that I had never thought of checking out these massive pieces. I had been all over New York (or so I thought) but had never come across such an interesting area as the one I found today. After browsing the internet for an entire couple of minutes (it’s summer, give me a break), I learned that the best borough for what I was looking for was Queens. I took the PATH into New York City, got on the “R” train headed for Queens, and basically eeny-meeny-miney-mo’ed a stop.

When I got off at Queens Plaza (the name seemed legit), I immediately thought “Thank you for dropping me… in the middle of nowhere?” I was seriously in the middle of abandoned streets with a few residential small businesses scattered around. I thought about turning back around and calling it a failed mission until I heard music coming from an alleyway. I was all smiles when I turned onto Davis Street, a very narrow, extremely sketchy road that farmed the area known as “5 Pointz.” Davis Street in itself was an art collection, but the large plateau that stretches out of it was a graffiti dream.

Every single building surrounding 5 Pointz was covered in art. Even the concrete floor was covered in what looked like a circular maze. There were about three dozen people playing old-school games and jamming to Caribbean instruments on one corner, a couple of people selling spray-painted gear on the other, and a very desolate me taking pictures. I have to say, however, the people were incredibly nice to me. They offered me food and a chair; too bad all I wanted was a couple good frames (and to stay there forever). There is even a small free street-art museum a few properties away. This was an all-around inviting atmosphere, like a very sweet taste of Socialism.

I guess I have found something to do this summer. I will try to explore as many of these places as I can. I thought my Metro Card would let me down today, but when the hell does it?
